Domaine de Baal -The little secret of Lebanon.

Only less than 1 hour from the Temple of Bacchus, you will find Domaine de Baal. Located on the foothills of Mount Lebanon in the Bekaa Valley, Domaine de Baal, and the owner Sebastien Khoudry is starting to get some well deserved attention. Up until now, Chateau Musar have got basically all the attention, but other different wines from Lebanon are now gaining more popularity. Like Domaine de Baal that got some decent reviews by Mark Squieres in the October issue of The Wine Advocate and eRobertParker.com. The 2009 and 2011 gets 90 points, while the 2010 get 89 points. 2010 was a very difficult vintage for Sebastien though, with a very short winter with few precipitations and snow. The spring was quite dry, and a very hot summer with temperatures above 40 degrees for more than 20 days. Not many people know this, but producing wine in Lebanon goes back centuries, and Lebanon is among the oldest sites of wine production in the world (Wikipedia). When you ask someone about wine from Lebanon, they will most probably reply with that they have tasted or heard about the earlier mentioned Chateau Musar, but Domaine de Baal is completely different. Yes, they are both organic, but Domaine de Baal are using a different blend, and are also seen as the “new” Lebanon. Today Domaine de Baal export to France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic and the Netherlands, and together with Wine Impulse, they are looking into new markets like Sweden, Finland, Norway, Russia and other countries that recognize great organic boutique wine. Wine Impulse works only on commission (no costly intermediate), and importers buy directly from Domaine de Baal (FOB). Wine Impulse is the sales executive in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Russia, and will help with all questions regarding Domaine de Baal and their wine. Open for other countries as well, but production is limited at the moment with only 9.000 bottles a year.

New releases in Norway 6th. of November.

Today, two fantastic wines from our friends at Saó del Coster are launched in Norway, and available from the ordering range (bestillingsutvalget) at vinmonopolet.no.

The “S” (DO Priorat) is a fantastic blend of Garnacha (65%) and Carignan (35%), great to red meat and cold cuts like spanish ham, chorizo and sausages.

The “X” (DO Rias Baixas) is an excellent Albariño (100%) from their project in Galicia. Perfect to fish, seafood, light dishes and paella.

Saó del Coster is a wine making project created in 2004 by a group of Swiss friends passionate about the Priorat and its wines. Joel Chevallaz and Michel Grupper currently lead a group of shareholders and friends, running a responsible winery which is committed to the terroir, and is in the adaptation process of integrating biodynamic principles. The professional team of Saó del Coster is made up of Xavier, Michelle and Ángel, as well as the consulting of the oenologist and biodynamic specialist, Frédéric Duseigneur, former owner of Domaine Duseigneur.

In 2010 Saó del Coster also set up its project in Galicia, DO Rias Baixas, where they produce the “X”. Thanks to this Galician project, Saó del Coster can offer its customers a quality white wine that is elaborated in one of the most renowned appellations on a national and international scale.

The Saó del Coster team works traditionally and follows a minimum intervention philosophy in terms of agriculture as well as winemaking, respects nature’s cycles, uses biodynamic treatments in its lands and animal traction and the moon calendar for all of the work in the vineyards as well as the cellar. Their dedication is based on the desire to revive a way of working that is currently rarely used, and can create deep wines with great personalities that offer pleasure to whoever drinks them.
